Update January 6: We are highlighting this title again in light of the tragic events in Crans Montana, which sadly echo the Kiss Nightclub disaster in several unsettling ways.

At the end of January, Netflix released a mini-series that doesn’t try to entertain as much as it seeks to confront viewers with a national trauma. Every Day the Same Night focuses on the catastrophic Kiss Nightclub fire in Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul, where around 240 young people, many of them college students, lost their lives.

Instead of choosing a traditional documentary format, the streaming platform turned this real-life tragedy into a scripted drama. The series doesn’t just recreate the night of the fire; it follows the long and painful battle that followed, as grieving families pushed authorities for answers and accountability.

As actor Thelmo Fernandes explains, the project’s intention is clear: to “keep alive in our memory a story that should never be forgotten.”

What is Every day the same night about?

Every Day the Same Night revisits the 2013 fire that broke out in a nightclub, killing 242 people and shattering hundreds of families. While parents mourn children who were taken far too soon, public officials open an investigation to clarify how such a disaster could happen.

As the legal process begins, the parents organize and form an association, determined not to let the case fade away. Their search for the truth gradually reveals that local authorities may be withholding key information and that the official version of events doesn’t tell the whole story.

The series is adapted from the book of the same name by journalist Daniela Arbex and directed by Julia Rezende. The mini-series is made up of five episodes with telling titles—“That Night,” “In Mourning,” “Guilt,” “Trials and Proceedings,” and “A Never-Ending Story.” Together, they trace the emotional and judicial journey from the circumstances of the fire to the investigations and the families’ decade-long wait for answers and some form of reparation.

Release date: when did Every day the same night arrive on Netflix?

Every Day the Same Night became available to stream on Netflix starting Wednesday, January 25, 2023 at 9:01 a.m.

How viewers are reacting to this true-story Netflix drama

Online reactions make one thing very clear: this is not an easy watch. Many users describe the series as emotionally brutal, powerful, and deeply upsetting, especially because it is based on real events.

Across these reactions, common themes emerge: viewers warn that the series is emotionally heavy, describe feeling anger toward political and institutional failures, and praise the strength of the parents portrayed on screen. For many, Every Day the Same Night is less “binge-watch entertainment” and more a painful but necessary reminder of what happens when safety, responsibility, and transparency fail.
